What Is Functional Coherence™?

"For more than thirty years, one question has quietly followed me through every client, every classroom, every culture, and every conversation: Why do some people function remarkably well under pressure while others struggle, even when they have access to the same resources?"

That question never really left me.

Throughout my career as a psychologist, I studied the theories we all learn: personality, emotional regulation, resilience, communication, behavior, trauma, and neuroscience. Each discipline offered an important piece of the puzzle, and each helped me understand something valuable about the human experience.

But over time, I began to notice something that none of these models fully explained.

People don't live their lives one psychological construct at a time.

They don't wake up using only emotional regulation, or only executive functioning, or only resilience. Human beings function as living systems where thoughts, emotions, physiology, relationships, identity, and behavior are continuously influencing one another. We are never just one thing at a time.

Yet most assessments still measure us as if we were.

That realization became the starting point for what would eventually evolve into the Human Integration Method™ (HIM™) to the concept I now call Functional Coherence™.

Beyond Symptoms

For decades, many approaches in psychology and healthcare have focused on identifying symptoms, deficits, or isolated strengths. These tools have contributed enormously to science and clinical practice, and many remain essential today.

But they often leave us with another question: How is the person functioning as a whole?

Someone may communicate well but remain chronically dysregulated. Someone may report feeling optimistic while struggling to maintain healthy relationships. Someone else may experience grief or anxiety yet continue to make thoughtful decisions, nurture meaningful connections, and adapt effectively to life's demands.

These examples remind us that human functioning cannot always be understood by looking at a single variable.

So, What Is Functional Coherence™?

I define Functional Coherence™ as:

The degree to which the multiple systems that comprise human functioning operate in an organized, adaptive, and dynamically integrated manner, allowing individuals to regulate, relate, adapt, and participate effectively across changing life contexts.

Notice what this definition does not say. Functional Coherence™ is not about being perfect.

It is not about always feeling calm. It is not about never experiencing anxiety, sadness, conflict, or uncertainty. Life is inherently unpredictable. Functional Coherence™ is about something much more realistic: the ability of the human system to reorganize itself in response to change while maintaining adaptive functioning.

Human Beings Are Systems

One of the greatest lessons of my professional life has been learning that people cannot be reduced to isolated traits. The nervous system influences emotions. Emotions influence relationships. Relationships shape identity. Identity affects decision-making. The body communicates information long before words appear. Everything is connected. When one part of the system changes, the entire system reorganizes. This is why I believe human development should be understood as a process of integration rather than accumulation. We do not become healthier simply by adding more skills. We become healthier when those skills begin to work together. That is Functional Coherence™.

Why This Matters

The Human Integration Method™ does not ask only, "What is happening?"

It also asks: "How is this human system organizing itself?"

That subtle shift changes everything. It moves our attention away from labels alone and toward understanding patterns, interactions, and adaptive functioning.

Whether we work with children, adults, families, teams, or organizations, the goal is no longer simply to eliminate problems. The goal is to strengthen the system's capacity to function as an integrated whole.

Looking Ahead

In future articles, I'll explore how Functional Coherence™ differs from other well-known concepts, including Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence, why I developed the Human Integration Assessment™ (HIA™), and how the Functional Coherence Index™ (FCI™) was designed to measure this emerging construct.

My hope is that these conversations contribute to a broader dialogue about human functioning, one that respects the complexity of people without losing sight of what matters most: helping individuals live with greater adaptability, connection, and integration.

Thank you for joining me on this journey.
